Post-Primary Fallout Deepens as Senator Shehu Umar Dumps APC for PRP
Fresh cracks have emerged within the All Progressives Congress following the resignation of Senator Shehu Buba Umar from the ruling party over what he described as a collapse of internal democracy and the marginalisation of genuine party members.
The Bauchi South lawmaker announced his defection to the People’s Redemption Party, declaring that the APC had abandoned fairness, inclusiveness and transparent leadership in favour of political exclusion and elite control.
His exit adds to growing post-primary tensions within the ruling party as aggrieved stakeholders across several states continue to challenge the conduct of internal processes ahead of the 2027 political cycle.

In a strongly worded declaration, Senator Umar said his decision followed extensive consultations with political associates, youth groups, women organisations, supporters and stakeholders across Bauchi State.
According to him, the APC had steadily drifted away from democratic principles and grassroots participation, leaving loyal members sidelined in critical decision-making processes.
> “Nigeria’s democracy can only thrive where political parties allow fairness, equal opportunity, internal democracy and active participation of members,” he stated.
The senator described the PRP as a platform rooted in justice, accountability, transparency and people-oriented governance, insisting that his movement was driven by the need to defend the interests of ordinary Nigerians facing worsening economic hardship and insecurity.
He said the country urgently requires leaders willing to prioritise service, development and responsive governance over political manipulation and internal suppression.
> “Our people deserve better governance, better opportunities and leadership that truly listens to their concerns,” he declared.
Umar further framed his defection as part of a broader political rescue mission aimed at confronting poverty, unemployment, insecurity and what he called poor governance across the country.
The lawmaker pledged to continue championing policies focused on youth empowerment, education, healthcare, agriculture and job creation, while urging his supporters to join him in the PRP to sustain what he described as “the struggle for social justice and accountable leadership.”
His resignation is expected to intensify political realignments in Bauchi State and deepen concerns within the APC over internal dissatisfaction brewing beneath the surface following recent party primary disputes.
