The Peter Obi Media Office has challenged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to personally engage Nigerians on his administration’s record as the country moves towards the 2027 presidential election.
The group said voters should hear directly from presidential contenders on the economy, governance, security and their plans for the country, rather than depend largely on statements from political allies and government officials.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, August 25, the spokesman of the Peter Obi Media Office, Idris Zekeri Jnr, said the 2027 election should focus on the records, competence, character and policy choices of the candidates.
The group questioned whether an incumbent seeking re-election could effectively ask Nigerians for another mandate without personally explaining his administration’s achievements and challenges.
It urged Tinubu to tell Nigerians what his government has achieved since taking office in 2023 and what he would do differently if given another term.
“If President Tinubu believes his administration has performed well, let him come before Nigerians and say so himself,” the statement said.
The Peter Obi Media Office also questioned the President’s reported absence from the National Peace Accord convened by the National Peace Committee, led by former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar.
It said direct participation by presidential candidates in national engagements would strengthen accountability and give voters an opportunity to assess their positions.
The group called on all major presidential contenders to make themselves available for public debates, town hall meetings and other platforms where Nigerians can question them directly.
It said such engagements should be seen as part of democratic accountability rather than an attempt to undermine the office of the President.
“The presidency is not a throne. The President is not a monarch. The President is a servant of the people,” the group said.
The media office urged political parties and candidates to keep the 2027 campaign focused on issues and allow Nigerians to assess competing records, ideas and policy proposals.
It concluded with a direct challenge to Tinubu: “If President Tinubu wants another four years, let him come to the people.”
