INEC bows to judicial order, affirms Gombe-led SDP structure

The leadership crisis within the Social Democratic Party (SDP) has taken a decisive turn as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) moved to realign its records in line with court decisions affirming the party’s leadership structure under Abubakar Sadiq Gombe.
The update by the electoral umpire follows prolonged internal wrangling that split the party into rival camps, each laying claim to legitimacy at the national level. The dispute, which intensified after the controversial removal of former National Chairman Shehu Gabam, had created parallel centres of authority and deepened uncertainty within the party.
INEC’s latest stance is being interpreted as a procedural enforcement of judicial supremacy rather than a political intervention, reinforcing its position that party leadership matters are ultimately settled by the courts.
Within the Gombe-led faction, the development is seen as a validation of a long legal and organisational struggle to restore order to the party’s national leadership. Supporters argue that the recognition could help reposition the SDP ahead of future electoral contests, especially as attention shifts toward 2027.
On the other hand, the Gabam-aligned camp insists that the dispute is not entirely resolved, maintaining that additional legal interpretations are still required to fully determine the party’s authentic leadership.
Analysts say the development may not immediately end internal tensions, but it has significantly shifted the balance of recognition in favour of the court-backed structure now reflected in INEC’s records.
