Bauchi Highway Tragedy: 11 Dead as Tanker, Bus Collision Sparks Inferno
A deadly collision between a police mini-tanker and a commercial bus has left at least 11 people dead and dozens injured in Bauchi State, in what authorities describe as a preventable road tragedy.
The crash occurred Friday evening at Panshanu Hill along the Bauchi–Jos Federal Highway, a stretch already known for its challenging terrain and safety concerns.
According to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the impact triggered a fire, engulfing both vehicles and trapping passengers, some of whom were burnt beyond recognition.
In all, 43 people were involved in the crash, with 32 sustaining injuries of varying severity. The victims included men, women, and children, underscoring the scale of the disaster.
Preliminary investigations point to dangerous driving and worn-out tyres as the likely causes—factors that continue to plague Nigeria’s highways despite repeated warnings from safety authorities.
FRSC officials said the incident was reported minutes after it occurred, with rescue teams arriving promptly. Survivors were evacuated to Toro General Hospital, while the deceased were also taken to the facility.
Beyond the immediate loss, the incident has renewed concerns over road safety compliance, vehicle maintenance, and enforcement gaps on major highways, especially as traffic volumes increase.
The FRSC confirmed that the wreckage has been cleared, but the human toll remains a stark reminder of the consequences of negligence on the road.
