Police Arrest Impostor Posing as JAMB Official, Recover Exam Slips in Anambra
Operatives of the police in Anambra State have arrested a man suspected of impersonating an official of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), alongside the recovery of multiple examination materials.
The suspect, identified as Eric Nwombu, was arrested on April 14 by operatives attached to the Inspector-General of Police Safe School Initiative following intelligence from a cyber café in Atani, Ogbaru Local Government Area.
According to a statement by the Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, Tochukwu Ikenga, the suspect allegedly posed as a 2026 JAMB coordinator and was found collecting examination slips from students who had visited the centre to confirm their examination details.
Items recovered from him included eight JAMB examination slips and an exercise book containing names and examination numbers of candidates, which he reportedly could not account for.
Police said the suspect’s suspicious behaviour raised concerns among staff at the cyber café, prompting them to alert security operatives.
“On sighting the operatives, the suspect attempted to flee but was arrested,” Ikenga stated.
During preliminary questioning, the suspect allegedly claimed to be a JAMB coordinator in Atani, but authorities said his explanation was found unsatisfactory.
He has since been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation.
The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, Ikioye Orutugu, reaffirmed the command’s commitment to protecting the integrity of public examinations, urging residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to security agencies.
