Former President of the Senate, Senator Ahmad Ibrahim Lawan, has called for an end to tribal politics in Nigeria, urging citizens and leaders to embrace a renewed spirit of unity, sacrifice, and national rebirth.
In a personally signed statement issued on Wednesday to commemorate the 2026 Eid-el-Kabir celebration, Lawan said the season should serve as a moment of deep reflection on nation-building, urging Nigerians to rise above ethnic and sectional divisions.
He described Eid-el-Kabir as a timeless reminder of faith, obedience, and selflessness, noting that the lessons of Prophet Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice what was most precious should guide the country’s collective journey toward peace and progress.
“In the sublime act of Prophet Ibrahim’s (AS) willingness to offer his dearest possession, we find the eternal metaphor for our national journey. It teaches us that the path to a greater collective destiny is paved with the stones of personal sacrifice, faith, and submission to the will of the Almighty,” he stated.
Lawan stressed that Nigeria’s development depends on leaders and citizens prioritising the national interest over personal or sectional gains, warning that tribal politics remains a major obstacle to unity and stability.
He called on Nigerians to embrace compassion, patience, and mutual understanding, drawing inspiration from the resilience of historical Islamic figures such as Hajar and Prophet Ibrahim (AS).
The former Senate President also urged continued prayers for national leaders, including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, expressing optimism that Nigeria is moving toward a season of renewal and prosperity.
“Let us remain resolute in our prayers for our President, His Excellency Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, our leaders and institutions, trusting that through steadfastness, our season of bountiful rain and rejuvenation is near,” he said.
Lawan further reiterated that national cohesion remains essential for stability, warning that without unity, meaningful development would remain elusive.
