The Northern Senators Forum has celebrated the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III, as he marks his 70th birthday, highlighting his journey from the Nigerian Army to one of Nigeria’s most prominent traditional leadership positions.
In a birthday message signed by the forum’s Chairman, Senator Abdulaziz Musa Yar’Adua, the senators described the Sultan’s seven decades as a life marked by military service, leadership and commitment to Nigeria.
The forum recalled that the Sultan rose to the rank of Brigadier-General in the Nigerian Army and took part in peacekeeping operations in Africa during his military career.
He also served in military command, presidential security and diplomatic assignments before his emergence as the 20th Sultan of Sokoto in 2006.
The senators said the Sultan had brought his experience in the military and public service to his traditional and religious responsibilities.
They particularly praised his advocacy for peace, interfaith dialogue and peaceful coexistence among Nigeria’s diverse communities.
According to the forum, the Sultan has consistently engaged political, religious and community leaders across ethnic and religious lines in efforts to promote national unity.
The senators said such engagement had made his leadership especially important amid Nigeria’s current social, security and political challenges.
The Northern Senators Forum thanked God for the Sultan’s 70 years of life and service and prayed for continued health, wisdom and strength.
They also wished him more years of meaningful service to the Sultanate, the Muslim Ummah, northern Nigeria and the country.
“Happy 70th Birthday, Your Eminence. May your years ahead be filled with greater accomplishments, peace and divine blessings,” the senators said.
