Obi Rolls Out Bold Reform Agenda After Securing NDC Presidential Ticket

Presidential candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Coalition (NDC), Peter Obi, has unveiled an ambitious roadmap for tackling insecurity, reviving the economy, expanding healthcare and transforming education, declaring that Nigeria can still reclaim its promise through visionary leadership and national unity.
Speaking in Abuja on Saturday after formally accepting the party’s presidential nomination for the 2027 election, Obi presented what he described as a practical blueprint for rebuilding public trust, restoring national productivity and putting the country back on the path of sustainable development.
The former Anambra State governor said his candidacy represents more than a political ambition, insisting that the task ahead is a collective effort to rescue Nigeria from years of economic decline, insecurity and institutional failures.
“This moment is not about Peter Obi; it is about Nigeria,” he told party delegates and supporters. “It is about restoring hope, rebuilding confidence and creating a future our children can be proud of.”
Obi used the occasion to lay out key pillars of his proposed administration, with security topping the list. He pledged to deploy intelligence-led policing, modern technology and stronger inter-agency cooperation to combat terrorism, banditry and other violent crimes.
He argued that lasting security would also require addressing poverty, unemployment and social exclusion, which he identified as major drivers of instability across the country.
On healthcare, Obi promised a significant expansion of health insurance coverage and increased investment in the sector, pledging that every ward in Nigeria would have access to a functional primary healthcare centre.
The NDC standard-bearer also placed education at the centre of his development agenda, promising increased funding for schools, teacher training, technology-driven learning and vocational education aimed at preparing young Nigerians for a competitive global economy.
Seeking to address the nation’s food crisis, Obi said agriculture would become a major engine of economic growth under his administration. He pledged large-scale investment in farming and agro-processing, arguing that Nigeria must shift from food import dependence to domestic production.
The former governor equally targeted Nigeria’s long-standing electricity challenges, promising an aggressive expansion of power generation and distribution capacity to support industrialisation, business growth and job creation.
For the economy, Obi pledged targeted support for small and medium-scale enterprises through improved access to credit, lower borrowing costs and business-friendly policies designed to stimulate investment and entrepreneurship.
He also vowed to pursue transparency in government, reduce wasteful public spending and strengthen accountability across public institutions.
On democratic governance, Obi promised to uphold the rule of law, protect political freedoms and ensure that opposition parties operate without intimidation or interference.
Throughout the speech, the NDC presidential candidate repeatedly returned to a familiar theme that has defined his political movement over the years: hope.
With the 2027 race gradually taking shape, Obi urged Nigerians not to surrender to despair, insisting that the country’s challenges, though daunting, remain surmountable.
“A New Nigeria is possible,” he declared, drawing applause from supporters as he formally launched what is expected to be one of the most closely watched presidential campaigns ahead of the next general election.
