HURIWA Blasts 3am Police Raid Scandal, Sparks National Outrage

Outrage is boiling over in Imo State following explosive allegations of a shocking midnight police invasion that has left a grieving family shattered and raised fresh fears about the growing misuse of state power.
In what critics are already branding a chilling abuse of authority, armed police operatives reportedly stormed a private residence in Owerri at about 3:00am, dragging away brothers of a deceased man in a manner described as terrifying, forceful, and potentially unlawful. The operation, allegedly carried out in the company of the widow of the deceased, has ignited national concern over what many see as a dangerous weaponization of law enforcement in a deeply sensitive family dispute.
The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has reacted with fury, warning that the incident—if proven—signals a disturbing descent into lawlessness and unchecked impunity within the Nigeria Police Force. The group is demanding immediate intervention from the Inspector General of Police, insisting that the matter goes far beyond a domestic disagreement and strikes at the heart of citizens’ fundamental rights.
At the centre of the unfolding drama is the death of Mr. Vitus Ugbaja, who died in July 2025, and the bitter dispute that followed between his widow, Mrs. Chibuzor Ugbaja, and his family over burial arrangements and property. A petition submitted to the Assistant Inspector General of Police in Umuahia alleges that tensions had been escalating for months—but few could have anticipated the crisis spiraling into an alleged armed midnight crackdown.
What has further deepened suspicion is the claim that the Assistant Inspector General in charge of Imo, Abia, and Ebonyi States was already handling the matter before the raid occurred—raising troubling questions about who authorized the operation, under what legal basis, and why due process appears to have been bypassed.
Rights advocates say the incident bears the hallmarks of a “coordinated intimidation operation,” warning that the normalization of such tactics could erode the rule of law and embolden further abuses.
HURIWA has now issued a series of urgent demands, including the immediate release of the detained family members, a transparent probe into the officers involved, and swift disciplinary action against anyone found culpable.
The group also challenged the Imo State Commissioner of Police to break the silence and explain how such a controversial operation could occur under his watch without public accountability.
“This is no longer just a family dispute—it is a test of whether the police still operate within the law or above it,” HURIWA declared, warning that failure to act decisively could plunge public confidence in law enforcement to a new low.
As tension mounts and questions multiply, the silence from police authorities is only fueling suspicion, leaving many Nigerians asking a troubling question: who protects citizens when those meant to enforce the law are accused of breaking it?
