Fubara Steps Aside from APC Governorship Race

Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, has withdrawn from the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship primary, describing the move as a difficult but necessary sacrifice to preserve peace and unity in the state.
In a personally signed statement released on Wednesday night, Fubara said his decision followed wide consultations with family, close associates, and political stakeholders ahead of the party’s primary exercise.
He explained that the choice was guided by the need to place the stability of Rivers State above personal ambition, stressing that leadership sometimes demands stepping back for the greater good.
According to him, the prevailing political climate required restraint and unity, adding that he would support whoever eventually emerges as the APC governorship candidate.
Fubara noted that while the decision may disappoint some supporters, it was taken with the long-term interest of the state in mind, especially at a sensitive political period.
He acknowledged that the process came with pressure and difficult considerations but maintained that his silence during consultations was intentional to avoid further tension.
The governor also expressed appreciation to the leadership of the APC and thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for what he described as encouragement during the period of deliberation.
He insisted that his withdrawal should not be misconstrued as weakness or defeat, but as a deliberate act of statesmanship aimed at promoting political stability.
The development is expected to significantly alter the dynamics of the APC governorship contest in Rivers State as preparations intensify ahead of the 2027 elections.
