Court Halts Shake-Up in ADC, Upholds State Chairmen in Power Struggle⁹

The leadership crisis within the African Democratic Congress took a decisive twist on Tuesday as a trial court moved to halt any disruption of the party’s existing structures, ruling in favour of its State Chairmen and ordering all sides to maintain the current leadership arrangement.
The turning point came during proceedings when the presiding judge sought clarity on whether the party was planning a national convention—an issue at the heart of the dispute. Defence counsel dismissed the claim, stating unequivocally that no such convention was in the works. That response set the tone for the court’s directive.
Invoking the principle of status quo ante bellum—a return to the state of affairs before the conflict—the court effectively froze all attempts to alter the party’s leadership structure. The implication is clear: the existing state executive committees remain legally protected, and any effort to dissolve or replace them would amount to a direct violation of the court’s order.
The judgment delivers a significant boost to the State Chairmen, who have been locked in a fierce contest for control with a coalition-backed leadership bloc. For them, the ruling is both a legal shield and a political statement, reinforcing their hold on the party’s grassroots machinery.
Beyond the immediate courtroom victory, the decision is already being viewed through a broader political lens. Analysts suggest it could reshape internal power dynamics within the party ahead of the 2027 general elections, as control of state structures often plays a decisive role in candidate emergence and strategic direction.
Reactions have been swift. The State Chairmen have welcomed the ruling as a reaffirmation of their legitimacy and a victory for internal democracy. The coalition leadership, while yet to fully respond, is expected to regroup and consider its next legal steps, including a possible appeal.
Observers say the development once again underscores the judiciary’s growing influence in managing intra-party conflicts, particularly at a time when political alignments are becoming increasingly fluid.
While the court has adjourned further proceedings and additional related cases remain pending, the immediate effect of the ruling is clear—it stabilises the party’s state-level structures for now, even as the larger leadership battle within the ADC continues to unfold.
