Bello, Gbajabiamila Offer Divergent Advice to Abejide at Abuja Event
Former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, and the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, have offered contrasting political counsel to the lawmaker representing Yagba Federal Constituency, Leke Abejide, urging him to remain steadfast in his political journey despite ongoing challenges.
Both leaders spoke at a dinner held in Abuja over the weekend in honour of Abejide’s wife, Deaconess Esther Abejide, who celebrated her 50th birthday.
In his remarks, Bello described Abejide as a committed democrat who has demonstrated resilience in pursuing his political ambitions. He recalled Abejide’s initial attempt to secure a seat in the House of Representatives under the All Progressives Congress (APC), noting that despite early setbacks, he returned stronger and has continued to make significant impact in his constituency.
“He came back the second time and today he is performing and touching lives across the board,” Bello said, adding that Abejide’s political trajectory reflects perseverance and strategic growth.
The former governor also referenced Abejide’s governorship ambition in Kogi State, stating that although he did not emerge victorious, the experience served as a valuable learning curve. He commended the lawmaker for supporting the eventual winner rather than resorting to litigation, describing the decision as a mark of political maturity.
Bello further praised Abejide’s contributions at the National Assembly, noting that despite being a member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), he has supported the administration both openly and behind the scenes. He, however, urged the lawmaker to return to the APC, calling on stakeholders from Yagba Federal Constituency to support the move.
“We want Leke back in APC,” Bello declared.
In contrast, Gbajabiamila commended Abejide’s consistency and political strength within the ADC, describing his repeated electoral victories on the platform as evidence of his personal influence and grassroots appeal.
“For a man to contest elections in a politically competitive state like Kogi under a relatively smaller party and win repeatedly, it tells you who he is,” Gbajabiamila said.
He noted that Abejide has not only sustained the ADC’s presence but has also expanded its reach by bringing in additional representation.
Gbajabiamila, however, advised the lawmaker against defecting to the APC, urging him instead to remain in the ADC and consolidate his political structure.
“Stay in ADC. Fight. Hold on to your party. Do not allow anyone take it from you. You have built it with your sweat and resources,” he said.
He encouraged Abejide to remain steadfast, describing him as a determined political figure who should continue to pursue his convictions.
