2027: Stop Dragging Jonathan Into Broken System — Lamido Warns Political Actors

Former Jigawa State Governor, Sule Lamido, has cautioned against mounting calls for former President Goodluck Jonathan to re-enter frontline politics ahead of the 2027 general elections, warning that such pressure reflects deeper frustrations within Nigeria’s political system rather than a workable solution to its challenges.
In a strongly worded message shared on his social media page, Lamido argued that the renewed agitation for the return of Goodluck Jonathan is being driven by what he described as widespread disillusionment with the current political order.
He said Nigeria’s political environment has become so weakened and fragmented that citizens are increasingly turning to symbolic figures instead of demanding institutional reforms and credible leadership structures.
Lamido cautioned that bringing Jonathan back into active partisan contest would amount to exposing a former president—now regarded internationally as a statesman—to what he described as a “murky and emotionally charged political arena.”
According to him, Jonathan’s global reputation and status as an elder statesman should be preserved outside partisan battles, adding that his influence is better deployed in advisory and peace-building roles rather than electoral competition.
The former governor stressed that Nigeria’s recurring political crises cannot be resolved by “personality returns,” but through deep structural reforms, stronger party ideology, and a renewed commitment to democratic discipline.
He further noted that the current push for Jonathan reflects a broader national frustration with governance, but warned that nostalgia-driven politics could distract from the urgent task of rebuilding institutions.
Lamido’s remarks add fresh momentum to ongoing debates about the 2027 political landscape, where speculation over potential candidates continues to intensify across party lines.
