The Social Democratic Party (SDP) is banking on women to build the grassroots political structure it hopes will drive its campaign in the 2027 general elections.
The party’s strategy emerged in Abuja when its national women leadership met state women leaders and directed them to begin wider mobilisation across wards and communities.
The National Speaker of the SDP Women Parliament, Ambassador Hajiya Sa’adatu Abdullahi, told the women that the coming election would be won through organisation, not promises.
She asked the state leaders to build strong structures in every state, ward and community and take the SDP message directly to households.
“2027 will not be won by wishful thinking. It will be won by organisation, mobilisation, sacrifice, strategy and engagement,” Abdullahi said.
She said the women’s mission was to organise, mobilise, participate and deliver results for the party.
Abdullahi also warned against internal divisions, urging the women to put aside their differences and focus on building a united political force.
According to her, women must move beyond attending meetings and become active players in the party’s grassroots operations.
“Our strength is our unity. Our power is our organisation. Our weapon is our determination. Our mission is victory,” she said.
The SDP leadership also used the meeting to assure women of a bigger role in the party.
The National Chairman, Professor Sadiq Gombe, represented by the South-South Deputy National Chairman, Senator Ugochukwu Uba, said the party was being reorganised ahead of the next election.
Uba said the SDP would make women’s inclusion a major part of its political programme, including a proposed 50-50 arrangement in appointments and party organisations.
“We are going to make provision for women. In appointments and in all organisations, it is going to be 50-50,” he said.
He said the party’s forthcoming manifesto would contain specific provisions for women and other groups, adding that nobody would be left behind under an SDP government.
The SDP leadership urged the women to return to their states and immediately begin implementing the resolutions of the meeting.
The party also praised the women who travelled to Abuja at their own expense, saying their sacrifice showed that the grassroots mobilisation drive had already begun.
With the 2027 election approaching, the SDP said it was determined to use its women’s structure to reach voters at the grassroots and expand its political presence across the country.
