President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has extended his working vacation in Europe by a few days and is expected to return to Nigeria at the weekend, the Presidency has announced.
The development was contained in a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, on Monday.
According to the Presidency, Tinubu has continued to direct the affairs of government while away, including ordering an independent investigation into the deaths of suspected illegal miners in Minna, Niger State.
With Vice President Kashim Shettima currently in New York representing the President at the 81st United Nations General Assembly, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, will continue to represent Tinubu at official events.
The Presidency, however, did not announce Akume as Acting President or say that he had assumed presidential powers.
“The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, who has also been representing the President at events, will continue to do so,” Onanuga said.
On the political front, the Director-General of the Presidential Campaign Council, Senator Abubakar Yari, has been leading party leaders in consultations with prominent traditional rulers across the country.
The Presidency said Tinubu departed Nigeria on August 30 for London to begin his working vacation before proceeding to Paris, France, where he held meetings with French President Emmanuel Macron and businessman Vincent Bolloré.
The President is expected to return to Nigeria at the weekend.
