SDP Begins Preparations for National Convention, Inaugurates Committee

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has commenced preparations for its forthcoming national convention with the inauguration of a committee to oversee the process.
National Chairman of the party, Sadiq Gombe, disclosed this in Abuja shortly after the party participated in the ongoing verification and inspection exercise conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Gombe explained that the newly constituted committee would coordinate all activities leading to the convention, including nominations and other key party programmes. He announced that the committee is chaired by Usman Bugaji, with Mulikat Akanbi serving as deputy chairman, while Jonathan Gaza Gbefwi will act as secretary alongside other party leaders and stakeholders.
He further revealed that invitations would soon be extended to party stakeholders and members of the media to ensure transparency and adequate coverage of the convention proceedings.
Speaking on the INEC verification exercise, the SDP chairman said the party fully complied with all requirements by submitting relevant documentation and presenting members for identification using valid means such as voter cards, driver’s licences, and international passports.
According to him, the party currently boasts about 15 million registered members nationwide, with ongoing membership registration expected to strengthen its base ahead of congresses, conventions, and primary elections scheduled for 2026.
Gombe noted that key party figures, including members of the National Executive Committee, state chairmen, and zonal leaders, were present during the verification exercise, which he described as peaceful, transparent, and successful.
He reiterated that internal party matters—such as leadership issues, congresses, and disciplinary processes—remain strictly within the jurisdiction of the party, in line with its constitution.
The SDP chairman also urged the public and the media to rely on verified information and disregard misinformation, particularly on social media platforms.
Gombe reaffirmed the party’s commitment to strengthening its internal structures and building a formidable platform for future political engagements.
