Kalu Champions Court Expansion, Youth Empowerment, SEDC Transparency

Senator Orji Uzor Kalu has advocated reforms aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s judicial system, expanding opportunities for young people, and ensuring accountability in the operations of the South East Development Commission (SEDC).
Speaking during Senate proceedings on June 10, Kalu backed two bills seeking to increase the number of judges in the Federal High Court and justices in the Court of Appeal, arguing that the measures would help tackle delays in the administration of justice and improve access to the courts.
The former Abia State governor maintained that an efficient judiciary is vital to democracy and national development, noting that reducing the burden on existing courts would enhance public confidence in the justice system.
Kalu also highlighted his continued investment in human capital development, particularly among youths in Abia North. He disclosed that some beneficiaries from the district are currently undergoing specialised training in green finance and financial supervision in China, while others are pursuing postgraduate studies through various international scholarship programmes.
According to him, equipping young people with global knowledge and skills remains one of the most effective ways to drive economic growth and create lasting opportunities for communities.
The senator further underscored the importance of transparency in public institutions while chairing an oversight session involving the leadership of the South East Development Commission. During the engagement, lawmakers requested detailed documentation on the commission’s finances, projects, procurement activities, staffing structure, and compliance procedures.
Kalu stressed that development agencies must remain accountable to the people they serve, insisting that every public fund allocated for regional development should be transparently managed and properly accounted for.
He said strengthening institutions, empowering citizens, and promoting responsible governance remain central to his legislative agenda, adding that sustainable national progress depends on effective leadership and accountability at all levels.
