FEC approves smart transport databank to modernize Nigeria mobility system
The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved the establishment of the Smart National Transport Databank (SNTDB), a major digital infrastructure initiative aimed at transforming Nigeria’s transport management through real-time data integration and intelligent mobility systems.
The project, developed by the Nigerian Institute of Transport Technology (NITT) under the Federal Ministry of Transportation, is designed to create a centralized national platform for collecting, analyzing, and managing transport data across all sectors of mobility.
Officials say the system will support better transport planning, improved road safety, enhanced security coordination, and more efficient infrastructure development through evidence-based decision-making.
The SNTDB will operate under a Public–Private Partnership (PPP) arrangement using the DBFOT model, with Asia-Arab Investment Nigeria Limited serving as the private sector partner responsible for key implementation roles.
Major components of the project include the deployment of 250 solar-powered smart gantries nationwide, Traffic Management Centres in all 36 states and the FCT, a centralized national transport data centre, and RFID-enabled smart e-tag systems for vehicles.
Government stakeholders say the platform will enable real-time traffic monitoring, reduce revenue leakages, strengthen enforcement systems, and improve coordination among transport and security agencies.
The initiative is being driven by NITT leadership under Dr. Bayero Salih Farah, who has overseen its progression through technical and regulatory approvals leading to the FEC endorsement.
With the approval, Nigeria is expected to advance toward a fully digitized transport ecosystem, aligning with global trends in smart mobility and data-driven governance.
