The 2027 presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Peter Obi, has urged the Federal Government to move beyond condolences and take urgent action to stop recurring killings in Benue State.
Obi, in a statement posted on his X handle on Saturday, condemned the latest attack in Ayilamo, Logo Local Government Area, where civilians and security personnel were reportedly killed, describing the incident as deeply distressing.
“Whether the victim is a farmer, a child, a police officer, a soldier, a Christian, a Muslim, or a person of any ethnic group, every Nigerian life has equal value. We must stop counting our dead and start protecting our living,” he said.
Obi, who recently visited Benue to identify with victims of the Yelwata violence, said his attempt to reach the affected community was disrupted but vowed not to become indifferent to the suffering caused by insecurity.
He called on security agencies to apprehend those responsible for the latest killings and prevent further attacks, warning that “Nigeria cannot continue on this path.” He also condoled with the victims’ families and concluded with his campaign message: “A new Nigeria is POssible.”
