Delayed, Not Denied: The Inspiring Journey of Sir Godfrey Ohuabunwa to the Nigerian Bar
Sir Godfrey Ohuabunwa fulfilled a lifelong dream as he was formally called to the Nigerian Bar, bringing to fruition a vision he had nurtured since childhood.
While the Call to Bar ceremony marked a significant milestone for many new legal practitioners, for Sir Godfrey it represented the culmination of decades of perseverance, resilience and unwavering faith in the face of repeated setbacks.
Born as the youngest of twelve children—ten boys and two girls—Sir Godfrey declared early in life that he would become the lawyer in the family. Inspired by his conviction, his older siblings pursued careers in medicine, engineering, architecture, pharmacy, accounting, business and other professions, leaving the legal profession for him.
After completing secondary school in the mid-1980s, he sat for the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) examination with one ambition: to study Law. Despite scoring competitively, he was repeatedly offered admission to study English Language instead.
Rather than abandon his dream, he spent four consecutive years pursuing every legitimate opportunity to gain admission into a Law programme. He enrolled in the Interim Joint Matriculation Board (IJMB), attended remedial programmes in Yola and eventually secured admission to the University of Maiduguri. Yet, owing to the prevailing admission policies at the time, he was once again offered English Language and Literature instead of Law.
Determined not to give up, he enrolled in virtually every Law course available alongside his English programme, hoping his outstanding academic performance would earn him a transfer to the Faculty of Law. Although he excelled academically, the transfer never came.
Accepting the circumstances without abandoning the dream, Sir Godfrey graduated with a degree in English Language and Literature from the University of Maiduguri, choosing excellence over disappointment while keeping alive his aspiration of becoming a lawyer.
Years later, during the COVID-19 period, he returned to the classroom to study Law. This time, decades after his first attempt, he excelled academically and graduated with distinction. Business commitments temporarily delayed his attendance at the Nigerian Law School, but once again he refused to allow circumstances to derail his ambition. He reorganised his professional engagements, completed his legal training and successfully earned his place among Nigeria’s newest legal practitioners.
Beyond his academic accomplishments, Sir Godfrey’s life has been shaped by faith. In 1995, he committed his life to Christ, a decision he credits with transforming his character, strengthening his discipline and providing the spiritual foundation for his personal and professional achievements. He believes that while determination kept him moving forward, it was God’s grace that ultimately made the seemingly impossible possible.
Today, Sir Godfrey Ohuabunwa is recognised as a successful entrepreneur, businessman, Harvard alumnus and legal practitioner. Yet, beyond these accomplishments, his greatest testimony is that of a man who refused to surrender his dream.
His remarkable journey is a powerful reminder that dreams may be delayed, but they are never denied; failure is not final; age is not a barrier to achievement; and every setback can become preparation for an even greater comeback.
The story of Sir Godfrey Ohuabunwa stands as an enduring source of inspiration for anyone facing rejection, delay or discouragement. It affirms that perseverance, faith and unwavering commitment can transform long-held aspirations into reality, regardless of how much time has passed.
