LP Bets on Governance Scholar Chibuzo Okereke for 2027 Presidency
In a move that signals its preference for technocratic leadership over traditional political heavyweights, the Labour Party (LP) has unveiled governance expert Dr. Chibuzo Okereke as its presidential candidate for the 2027 general election.
The party announced Okereke’s emergence on Friday in Abuja, describing him as a reform-minded leader whose background in public policy, legislative governance, and institutional development offers a fresh alternative for Nigerians seeking a departure from conventional politics.
Unlike many of the prominent figures already positioning themselves for the 2027 contest, Okereke comes from the policy and governance space, having built his career around research, legislative advisory services, and public sector reforms.
According to a statement issued by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ken Eluma Asogwa, Okereke emerged through a consensus process involving party leaders and stakeholders across the country.
The Labour Party said the choice reflects its commitment to competence, integrity, and evidence-based leadership at a time when Nigerians are demanding practical solutions to economic hardship, insecurity, and governance challenges.
Okereke currently heads the ERGAF-AFRICA Legislative Governance Innovation and Policy Hub, where he has led research and policy initiatives aimed at strengthening democratic institutions and public accountability. He also serves as a legislative consultant to committees and ranking members of the National Assembly.
An academic with a doctorate in Legislative Governance Studies, Okereke lectures in Public Policy and Administration at Miva Open University, Abuja, where he contributes to the training of future public sector leaders.
Party officials said his track record in governance advocacy, youth empowerment, and democratic reforms makes him uniquely qualified to lead a government focused on institutional renewal and national development.
The Labour Party expressed confidence that Okereke’s emergence would broaden political discourse ahead of the 2027 elections and offer Nigerians a candidate whose credentials are rooted more in policy expertise than political patronage.
With the race for the presidency gradually taking shape, the party believes its decision to field a governance scholar underscores a determination to challenge established political norms and present voters with a distinctly different leadership proposition.
