Umeh, Nwoye, Onunkwo Secure NDC Senatorial Tickets in Anambra
Prominent lawmakers and political figures have emerged as the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) senatorial candidates for Anambra State ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The party’s primary elections, conducted on Friday across the state, produced former senator Victor Umeh for Anambra Central, former senator Tony Nwoye for Anambra North, and businessman and philanthropist Ebuka Onunkwo for Anambra South.
The exercise formed part of the NDC’s nationwide primaries and was conducted using the direct voting Option A4 system. Party members turned out in large numbers across the state as accreditation and voting proceeded peacefully under the supervision of party officials.
Beyond the senatorial contests, the NDC also concluded primaries for the House of Representatives and the Anambra State House of Assembly, producing candidates for all 11 federal constituencies and 30 state assembly seats.
Speaking after the exercise, Anambra State NDC Chairman, Ikem Uzoezie, described the primaries as a major success, commending party members for their discipline and commitment to democratic values.
According to him, the transparent and orderly conduct of the exercise underscored the party’s dedication to internal democracy and credible leadership selection.
“We congratulate all successful aspirants and appreciate those who did not emerge for their maturity and sportsmanship. The process has further strengthened our party and positioned us for victory in the 2027 general elections,” Uzoezie said.
Speaking on behalf of the victorious candidates, Onunkwo expressed satisfaction with the peaceful conduct of the primaries and thanked party members for their support.
He said the candidates were united by a shared commitment to providing effective representation and driving development across the state.
“Anambra deserves leaders who are prepared to serve the people with integrity and vision. The quality of candidates produced by our party gives us confidence that a new chapter of people-centred representation and sustainable development is possible,” he stated.
The successful completion of the primaries is expected to energize the NDC’s campaign structure in Anambra as the party begins preparations for what is expected to be a fiercely contested 2027 election season.
