LP Reschedules 2027 Primaries to May 30, Cites Eid, Anniversary
The Labour Party(LP) has rescheduled its 2027 primary elections to Saturday, May 30, 2026, citing the need to accommodate the Eid el-Kabir celebration and activities marking the third anniversary of the inauguration of elected public office holders.
The decision was announced in a statement issued on Thursday by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ken Eluma Asogwa.
According to the party, the governorship and State Houses of Assembly primaries earlier scheduled for May 27, along with the presidential and National Assembly primaries fixed for May 29, have now been rescheduled to hold simultaneously on May 30.
The party explained that the earlier dates clashed with significant national events, noting that May 27 coincides with Eid el-Kabir celebrations, while May 29 marks three years since the inauguration of elected leaders in the country.
Describing itself as a “people-oriented and responsive political party,” Labour Party said the adjustment was necessary to allow members, aspirants, and stakeholders to participate fully in both religious and national observances.
“With this adjustment, all primaries for the offices of President, Governor, Senate, House of Representatives, and State Houses of Assembly will now hold simultaneously on Saturday, 30th May 2026,” the statement read.
The party expressed regret over any inconvenience the rescheduling may cause and thanked members for their understanding.
The development comes as political parties intensify preparations ahead of the 2027 general elections, with internal nomination processes already gathering momentum across the country.
