EFCC arrests ex-minister Mamman after evading capture using SIMs
Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission have arrested former Minister of Power, Saleh Mamman, after weeks of intensive surveillance in which he allegedly used multiple SIM cards, changing phone lines, and rotating between safe houses to evade detection.
The arrest, which took place around 3:30am in the Rigasa area of Kaduna State, followed coordinated intelligence operations launched after his conviction and sentencing in absentia by a Federal High Court in Abuja.
According to EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede, the operation marks a major breakthrough in the commission’s anti-corruption drive, stressing that no fugitive linked to corruption would escape justice regardless of how long they remain in hiding.
Investigators revealed that Mamman’s movements were difficult to track due to his constant switching of phone numbers and movement across multiple residences. However, operatives eventually traced him through digital surveillance and location tracking, leading to his arrest and the detention of two individuals accused of harbouring him.
Mamman had previously been convicted on multiple counts bordering on fraud and money laundering involving alleged diversion of billions of naira linked to major federal power projects, including Mambilla and Zungeru hydroelectric schemes, and was sentenced to 75 years imprisonment in absentia.
EFCC officials say the arrest sends a strong warning to public officials accused of financial crimes that the commission’s reach remains nationwide and persistent.
The former minister is expected to face further legal proceedings following his capture, as authorities move to enforce the court’s judgment.
