Kaduna APC Crisis Deepens as Aspirants Reject Consensus Candidates

A fresh political storm is brewing inside the All Progressives Congress in Kaduna State as aggrieved senatorial and House of Representatives aspirants have openly rebelled against the party’s consensus arrangement, threatening to trigger a deeper internal crisis ahead of the 2027 elections.
The angry aspirants, drawn from Kaduna’s northern and southern zones, rejected the process used in selecting candidates for the upcoming primaries, insisting it violated the party’s constitution and official nomination guidelines.
Leading the protest, Danjuma La’ah and other dissatisfied aspirants issued a 24-hour ultimatum to the state government and party leadership to immediately reverse the consensus arrangement or face what they described as a looming political explosion within the party structure.
The development signals growing resistance against the increasing use of consensus arrangements by APC power blocs across several states, where party leaders are attempting to avoid divisive primaries through negotiated candidate selections.
But in Kaduna, the move appears to have backfired.
The protesting aspirants accused party leaders of sidelining democratic participation and imposing candidates without proper consultation with stakeholders and party members.
According to them, the process lacked transparency and fairness, undermining confidence in the credibility of the primaries.
In a strongly worded protest, the group warned that forcing unpopular consensus candidates on party members could fracture the APC ahead of the general elections and deepen existing tensions within the state chapter.
Political observers say the Kaduna crisis reflects a broader national battle currently tearing through the APC, where struggles over tickets, endorsements, and political succession plans are exposing sharp divisions between party loyalists, incumbents, and emerging factions.
Across several states, consensus arrangements intended to preserve unity are instead provoking rebellion, accusations of manipulation, and threats of defection from aggrieved aspirants who believe internal democracy is being sacrificed for elite political deals.
In Kaduna specifically, analysts believe the latest confrontation could reopen unresolved political rivalries and weaken party cohesion if not carefully managed.
The aggrieved aspirants also hinted that failure to address their demands could lead to further escalation, including organised resistance against the party’s primary process.
Their protest now places additional pressure on APC leaders in the state to either renegotiate the consensus formula or risk prolonged internal instability capable of affecting the party’s electoral calculations ahead of 2027.
The crisis comes at a sensitive moment for the ruling party as APC structures nationwide struggle to balance political loyalty, zoning arrangements, incumbency interests, and grassroots expectations in one of the most competitive pre-election seasons since the party came to power.
For many party faithful, the Kaduna confrontation is another warning sign that beneath the APC’s public image of dominance, serious cracks are widening internally—and those cracks may become more visible as the battle for 2027 intensifies.
