UNIJOS Pioneer Alumni Turn Reunion Into Fresh Investment in Future Graduates

Pioneer alumni of the University of Jos (UNIJOS) have turned their reunion in Abuja into a fresh commitment to the university, with members pledging millions of naira for student awards, infrastructure and alumni programmes.

The three-day event, held from July 24 to 26, 2026, also featured the recognition of outstanding alumni, a leadership transition and a review of the association’s constitution.

It brought together members of the pioneer alumni group from Nigeria and abroad. Beyond reconnecting with old friends, the gathering focused on how members could turn their shared university experience into lasting support for UNIJOS.

One of the strongest commitments came from Professor Beze Adogu, who pledged ₦10 million over 10 years to fund awards for five outstanding graduating students in honour of his former lecturers.

Dr Henrietta Ukwu also pledged ₦2.5 million for infrastructure development, while Professor Obiageli Nnodu donated ₦1 million towards alumni programmes.

The financial commitments followed the recognition of five alumni for achievements in medicine, pharmaceutical research, public health and national service.

Professor Adogu was honoured for his contributions to kidney health, while Dr Ukwu received recognition for her work in global pharmaceutical medicine and COVID-19 vaccine development.

Professor Nnodu was recognised for her pioneering work in sickle cell disease research. Dr Ifeoma Anagbogu, OON, was honoured for her contribution to the global campaign against Guinea worm disease, while Mrs Priscilla Eleje was recognised for her role at the Central Bank of Nigeria and her historic signature on Nigerian currency notes.

The reunion also marked a change in leadership, with Ambassador Ozo Nwobu taking over from Sir Amechi Onianwa, KSC, as president of the association.

The alumni further reviewed their constitution and agreed that pioneer membership would be determined by the year members entered UNIJOS, with the pioneer cohort covering 1976 to 1980.

The gathering also featured a lecture on “Geriatric Welfare and Management” delivered by Professor Adogu, highlighting the health and lifestyle challenges associated with ageing.

For the new leadership, the reunion represents more than a celebration of the past. It offers an opportunity to use the alumni network, professional experience and resources of former students to support current students and strengthen the University of Jos.

The reunion ended on July 26 with a Community Breakfast and Fellowship, as members renewed their commitment to sustaining the bonds formed at the university and using them for service to their alma mater and society.
