The 2027 presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Peter Obi, says his campaign will deploy an independent results-monitoring system to track votes from every polling unit and transmit them to its situation room.
Obi said the plan is designed to give his team its own real-time record of polling-unit results and help detect discrepancies between figures announced at polling units and those declared at higher levels.
The former Anambra State governor disclosed this in an exclusive interview with ARISE 3News, stressing that his team would not rely solely on the official results transmission system of the Independent National Electoral Commission.
He said the proposed arrangement would run alongside INEC’s system, allowing his team to receive and independently verify results from polling units.
“We must make sure that at every polling unit, the votes are counted, the votes are recorded properly, the votes are transmitted properly,” Obi said.
He added that results would be transmitted simultaneously to the designated INEC platform and his team’s situation room.
Obi said the objective was to ensure that the figures recorded at polling units remained traceable throughout the collation process.
“All we are saying is that this time around, we will make sure that in every polling unit, we must have a system that transmits to our situation room the correct results,” he said.
The NDC candidate also urged INEC to resist political interference and conduct the 2027 election in a free, fair and transparent manner.
He said Nigerians must also take responsibility for protecting their votes by ensuring that ballots are properly counted and their choices reflected in the final results.
Obi said there was nothing complicated about conducting a transparent election, pointing to Ghana and other countries as examples.
His comments come amid renewed concerns over the credibility of the 2027 elections and calls for stronger safeguards against manipulation.
The former governor spoke after visiting Ogugu in Olamaboro Local Government Area of Kogi State, where he joined supporters to celebrate the emergence of Peter Ameh as the NDC’s Kogi East senatorial candidate.
Obi said the priority ahead of 2027 should be to build an electoral system in which every vote is properly counted, recorded and protected.
