Chairman of the Senate Committee on Army, Senator Abdulaziz Musa Yar’Adua, has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, for approving a substantial salary increase of between 30 and 80 per cent for personnel of the Nigerian Armed Forces.
Describing the decision as bold, timely and patriotic, Senator Yar’Adua said the pay rise, which takes effect from September 1, 2026, and will benefit about 250,000 military personnel across all ranks, reflects the President’s unwavering commitment to improving the welfare of the nation’s defenders.
According to him, the increase in the Armed Forces’ annual personnel wage bill from ₦660 billion to ₦924 billion sends a strong message that the sacrifices of Nigerian troops in the fight against terrorism, insurgency, banditry, kidnapping and other security threats are recognised and valued by the Federal Government.
“This landmark intervention will significantly boost the morale of our troops, strengthen their resolve and reassure them that the nation stands firmly behind them as they continue to make enormous sacrifices to safeguard Nigeria’s unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity,” he said.
The senator also praised the Nigerian Army for its resilience and professionalism despite the daunting security challenges confronting the country, noting that the salary review complements the Federal Government’s recent expansion of Army divisions aimed at enhancing operational effectiveness across the country.
He paid glowing tribute to officers and soldiers serving in various theatres of operation, particularly those on the frontlines in the North-East, North-West and other conflict zones, describing them as true patriots whose courage and selflessness continue to inspire the nation.
“Many of our brave officers and soldiers have paid the ultimate price in defence of our country. Their sacrifices will never be forgotten. To those still on the frontlines, your courage, dedication and patriotism remain the bedrock of Nigeria’s security. The nation salutes you,” Yar’Adua stated.
He assured that the Senate Committee on Army would continue to collaborate with the Executive to ensure the full implementation of the new salary structure, improved military funding, enhanced operational capabilities and better conditions of service for personnel.
Senator Yar’Adua expressed confidence that the renewed investment in troop welfare would further strengthen the Armed Forces’ capacity to defeat criminal elements and restore lasting peace across the country.
