Tinubu asks Senate to approve nomination of Five INEC Commissioners
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has formally requested the Senate to confirm the appointment of five Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
In a letter addressed to the Senate President, Tinubu stated that the nominations were in line with Section 154, Subsection 1 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
The nominees include:
Umar Yusuf Garba (Kano State)
Tai Saad Umar (Bauchi State)
Chukwuemeka Ibe Siakor (Anambra State)
Omar Mokhtar (Borno State – Reappointment)
Dr. Johnson Alalibo Sinike (Bayelsa State)
The President noted that this request supersedes his earlier correspondence dated March 12, following his decision to approve the reappointment of Omar Mokhtar for a second term.
Tinubu urged the Senate to expedite the confirmation process, emphasizing the critical role of INEC in strengthening Nigeria’s electoral system.
The Senate President referred the nominations to its Committee on Electoral Matters, which is expected to report back within a week.
This development comes as Nigeria continues to refine its electoral processes ahead of upcoming elections.
