Senate Sets Up 19-Member Committee to Monitor Emergency Rule in Rivers State
The Nigerian Senate has constituted a 19-member committee to provide legislative oversight on the recently declared emergency rule in Rivers State, following the suspension of the state’s democratic structures.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio announced the formation of the committee during plenary on Tuesday, stating that the upper chamber must ensure transparency and legality in the emergency administration, mirroring similar steps taken by the House of Representatives.
The committee will be tasked with monitoring the activities of the appointed Administrator of Rivers State, scrutinizing decisions made under the emergency governance framework, and ensuring adherence to constitutional provisions.
Senator Opeyemi Bamidele will chair the committee, while Senator Rufai Hanga, Deputy Minority Whip, will serve as Deputy Chairman. Other members include prominent senators such as Adamu Aliero (PDP, Kebbi), Osita Izunaso (APC, Imo), Osita Ngwu (PDP, Enugu), and Adams Oshiomhole (APC, Edo), among others. Mr. Charles Bala has been appointed Clerk and Secretary of the committee.
“If there is need to review, it will be after further consultation with our colleagues,” Akpabio stated, emphasizing the urgency and importance of the committee’s work.
The Senate’s action comes amid national debate over the legality and political implications of the emergency declaration, with the newly formed committee expected to play a pivotal role in upholding accountability during this critical period in Rivers State.
