PWAN Raises Alarm Over Benue Killings, Urges Swift National Response

The Rule of Law and Empowerment Initiative, popularly known as Partners West Africa Nigeria (PWAN), has expressed deep concern over the growing insecurity in Benue State, warning that the continued attacks and mass displacement threaten national peace, food security, and the rule of law.

In a statement signed by its Executive Director, Kemi Okenyodo, the civil society organization described the situation in Benue as a humanitarian emergency, citing ongoing violent attacks on rural communities by armed herders and criminal elements that have claimed dozens of lives and forced thousands from their homes.

“This is not just a security failure—it’s a breakdown of governance and accountability at every level,” Okenyodo said.

PWAN criticized the lack of deterrence and visible response from security agencies, calling for urgent federal intervention, improved intelligence coordination, and stronger protection for displaced persons. The group emphasized the toll on vulnerable populations, particularly women, children, and the elderly, many of whom are exposed to hunger, gender-based violence, and loss of access to health and education.

“The impact on women and girls is especially harrowing—displacement is increasing their vulnerability to abuse and exploitation,” the group warned.

PWAN also highlighted the broader implications of the violence on agriculture and food supply, noting that Benue’s role as the “Food Basket of the Nation” is under serious threat.

“With farmlands abandoned and farmers displaced, the ripple effects will hit households and markets nationwide.”

The organization called on the Federal Government to deploy coordinated security efforts, while urging the Benue State Government to scale up humanitarian aid and protection for displaced communities. It also appealed to the National Assembly to provide legislative solutions to land conflicts, armed group proliferation, and climate-induced migration.

PWAN reaffirmed its solidarity with the people of Benue, pledging to continue advocating for rights-based, gender-sensitive, and community-led responses to the crisis.
