Police to Deploy AI in Crime Fighting as IGP Intensifies South-East Security Drive

The Nigeria Police Force is set to introduce artificial intelligence into its operations as part of a sweeping reform agenda aimed at strengthening crime-fighting capabilities and improving security across the country.
The plan was unveiled during the Inspector-General of Police’s ongoing operational tour of the South-East, where senior police officers and security stakeholders reviewed strategies for addressing emerging security threats in the region.
Representing the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, at an engagement in Anambra, the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of the South-East, Kenechukwu Onwuemelie, said the force was embracing technology and intelligence-driven policing to stay ahead of criminal networks.
He disclosed that officers would receive specialized training on the application of artificial intelligence in investigations, intelligence analysis and other policing functions, describing the initiative as a major step toward modern law enforcement.
The visit formed part of a nationwide operational assessment designed to evaluate security challenges, boost operational efficiency and strengthen collaboration among security agencies, community leaders and other stakeholders.
Addressing officers and men of the Anambra State Police Command, the DIG stressed the need for security strategies tailored to the realities of the South-East, noting that effective intelligence gathering remains critical to combating criminal activities and maintaining public safety.
He also reiterated the police leadership’s commitment to a policing model built on professionalism, accountability and respect for human rights, urging personnel to uphold the highest standards in the discharge of their duties.
The engagement provided a platform for discussions on intelligence sharing, crime prevention and coordinated responses to security threats, with participants emphasizing the importance of stronger partnerships between law enforcement agencies and local communities.
Welcoming the delegation, the Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, Ikioye Orutugu, pledged the command’s continued support for the vision of the IGP and reaffirmed its commitment to community policing initiatives.
As insecurity continues to challenge parts of the country, the police leadership believes that combining technology, intelligence gathering and community partnerships will provide a more effective framework for preventing crime and safeguarding lives and property.
The South-East tour is expected to generate fresh security measures and operational recommendations as the police seek to enhance public safety and strengthen confidence in law enforcement across the region.
