Obi Mourns Ex-General, Demands Urgent Action Against Rising Insecurity

Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress(NDC), Peter Obi, has expressed concern over the deteriorating security situation in Nigeria, describing the reported death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar in kidnappers’ custody as a grim reflection of the nation’s security challenges.
In a statement on Sunday, Obi said he was deeply saddened by the tragic development, noting that the late military officer, who reportedly served the country with distinction, became a victim of the very insecurity he once fought against during his years in service.
The former Anambra State governor also drew attention to recent attacks in Sokoto State and Kwara State, where bandits and other criminal elements were said to have abducted citizens, disrupted commercial activities, and inflicted losses on local communities.
According to Obi, the incidents underscore the alarming spread of insecurity across the country, leaving farmers unable to cultivate their lands, traders fearful of travelling, and communities increasingly vulnerable to attacks.
He warned that the growing wave of kidnappings and violent crimes poses a serious threat to economic growth and national stability, stressing that no nation can achieve meaningful development when its citizens live in constant fear.
Obi called on the Federal Government and security agencies to adopt a more effective approach to combating insecurity through improved intelligence gathering, deployment of modern technology, stronger inter-agency collaboration, and enhanced support for security personnel.
While condoling the family of the late Major General Abubakar and other victims of insecurity nationwide, Obi maintained that decisive action is needed to reclaim communities from criminal elements and restore public confidence in the country’s security architecture.
He reiterated his belief that Nigeria can overcome its challenges through responsible leadership and deliberate reforms, affirming that a safer and more prosperous nation remains possible.
