Chairman of the Senate Committee on Defence, Senator Ahmad Ibrahim Lawan, PhD, GCON, has described President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s approval of a new salary structure for personnel of the Nigerian Armed Forces as one of the most significant investments in military welfare in recent years, saying it will strengthen troop morale and reinforce Nigeria’s fight against insecurity.
Senator Lawan said the upward salary review, which takes effect from September 1, 2026, demonstrates that the administration understands the inseparable link between national security and the welfare of the men and women who bear the responsibility of defending the country’s sovereignty.
He noted that the salary increases—ranging from 30 to 80 per cent across all ranks—reflect a deliberate effort to reward sacrifice, inspire professionalism and sustain the operational effectiveness of the Armed Forces at a time when Nigeria continues to confront terrorism, insurgency, banditry, kidnapping and other evolving security threats.
“The decision to increase the Armed Forces’ annual personnel wage bill from ₦660 billion to ₦924 billion is not merely a budgetary adjustment; it is a strategic national investment in the security and stability of our country.
“Our military personnel have remained steadfast under extraordinary circumstances, often making enormous personal sacrifices to preserve the unity and territorial integrity of Nigeria. They deserve not only our gratitude but concrete support that reflects the value we place on their service.”
The former Senate President said the new remuneration package sends a clear signal that government is determined to build a highly motivated, disciplined and combat-ready military capable of responding effectively to contemporary security challenges.
He urged officers and soldiers across the Army, Navy and Air Force to reciprocate the confidence reposed in them by redoubling their commitment to professionalism, discipline and operational excellence.
According to him, the changing dynamics of modern warfare require stronger joint operations, seamless intelligence sharing and closer cooperation among all branches of the Armed Forces and other security agencies.
“No single service can confront today’s complex security threats alone. Our collective strength lies in unity of command, coordinated operations and a shared commitment to the defence of our nation. This renewed investment in welfare should serve as a catalyst for even greater collaboration and operational success.”
Senator Lawan also reaffirmed the unwavering commitment of the National Assembly, particularly the Senate Committee on Defence, to supporting policies and appropriations that improve troop welfare, strengthen defence capabilities and provide the Armed Forces with the resources required to accomplish their constitutional mandate.
He expressed optimism that with sustained political will, improved welfare and continued investment in military capacity, Nigeria would consolidate recent gains against criminal elements and move steadily towards lasting peace and national security.
