“Left in the Dark”: Family of Kidnapped Kogi Monarch Cries Out for Help as Ransom Deadline Nears
By Friday Idachaba, Lokoja
The family of Pa. Dada James Ogunyanda, the Obalohun of Okoloke in Yagba West, Kogi State, has cried out for urgent assistance as they struggle to meet the N50 million ransom demanded by kidnappers holding the 80-year-old monarch.
Nearly a week after the traditional ruler was abducted from his palace in the early hours of Thursday, May 14, his loved ones say they have been left to fend for themselves—with no support from the political class or influential allies.
“This is a matter of life and death, and we feel abandoned,” a family source told journalists on Monday in Lokoja. “We’ve managed to raise N25 million by selling our personal belongings, but the kidnappers are still insisting on the full N50 million.”
The source also refuted widespread reports that the ransom had been slashed to N12 million, calling it misinformation. “There’s no such reduction. Our burden is still heavy, and the King’s health is failing,” he said.
The family is especially pained by the silence of those they once considered allies in power. “We’ve reached out to politicians—some won’t even take our calls anymore. It’s heartbreaking that in our time of need, we are being ignored,” the source said.
In a heartfelt appeal, the family called on corporate organizations, philanthropists, and members of the public to come to their aid. They specifically mentioned Senator Dino Melaye, Senator Sunday Karimi, Hon. Leke Abejide, Hon. James Faleke, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, and other Kogi leaders.
“This is beyond politics. It’s about saving a life. We are pleading with anyone—civil servants, market women, clergy, private citizens—to contribute in any way they can,” the source added.
They also appealed to the nation’s security agencies to ramp up rescue operations and to religious leaders to continue praying for the monarch’s safe return.
In a state where traditional institutions still carry deep respect and meaning, the continued captivity of a First Class ruler has cast a long shadow—and the family’s urgent call is for compassion, solidarity, and swift action.
