The Nigeria Labour Congress(NLC) has called on the Federal Government to introduce emergency measures as petrol prices rise to about ₦1,430 per litre in some urban centres.
The NLC said the latest increase could further worsen the pressure on workers and households already struggling with high transportation and living costs.
NLC President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, called for immediate palliatives and wage awards to help workers cope with the impact of the fuel price increase.
He also urged the Federal Government to ensure that crude oil is sold to local refineries in naira.
Ajaero warned that higher petrol prices would have wider effects on the economy, particularly through rising transport fares.
According to him, increases in transportation costs usually lead to higher prices for food, rent, school fees and other basic needs.
NLC seeks government intervention
The labour leader said the latest price increase came as pressure on oil marketers to reduce pump prices, following lower international crude prices, was beginning to yield results.
He argued that Nigeria, as an oil-producing country, should have measures to protect citizens from international oil market shocks.
“There is nothing wrong with the government subsidising the needs of citizens, especially in emergencies like this,” Ajaero said.
He urged the government to adopt emergency measures similar to interventions used by other oil-producing countries during periods of global energy instability.
The NLC said the government should act quickly to prevent the latest fuel price increase from placing further pressure on households and businesses.
The latest increase has also raised concerns over transportation costs, with reports of some commuters resorting to longer walks to reduce their daily transport expenses.
The labour union’s demand comes as Nigerians continue to face pressure from the rising cost of essential goods and services.
