Eid-el-Fitr: Barau Calls for Peace Prayers Amid Global Tensions
***Flags Economic Risks
The Deputy President of the Senate, Barau I. Jibrin, has urged Muslims to sustain prayers for global peace as they mark Eid al-Fitr, warning that escalating geopolitical tensions could further strain economies worldwide.
In a statement released through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ismail Mudashir, Barau said the end of Ramadan should serve as a moment for reflection, unity, and renewed commitment to compassion and shared humanity.
He noted that the declaration of March 20, 2026, as the first day of Shawwal by the Sultanate Council marks not just the conclusion of fasting, but a transition into a period that calls for sustained moral values and collective responsibility.
Rising Global Tensions and Economic Pressure
Barau expressed concern over the economic impact of ongoing international conflicts, particularly tensions involving the United States, Israel, and Iran, warning that such disputes are contributing to inflationary pressures and price instability across global markets.
He cautioned that prolonged hostilities could deepen economic hardship, especially for developing countries like Nigeria, and called on world leaders to prioritize diplomacy and de-escalation.
The Senate Deputy President commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for ongoing reforms aimed at stabilising the economy and strengthening national resilience.
He also referenced recent security directives requiring service chiefs to relocate to Maiduguri following renewed attacks, describing the move as a proactive step toward intensifying counter-insurgency operations.
Barau highlighted the importance of the 2026 national budget currently under consideration at the National Assembly, expressing optimism that its implementation would help address infrastructure gaps and support broader development goals.
He stressed the need for sustained collaboration between the executive and legislature to ensure that policies are effectively translated into tangible improvements in citizens’ lives.
As part of his Eid gesture, Barau announced the disbursement of N157 million to constituents across the 13 local government areas of Kano North Senatorial District.
The intervention, he explained, is aimed at assisting vulnerable residents in celebrating Eid with dignity and easing economic pressures during the festive period. He also noted the distribution of over 60,000 bags of assorted items across parts of Kano State during Ramadan and Sallah.
Barau encouraged Muslims to uphold the values learned during Ramadan by continuing acts of kindness, supporting those in need, and fostering peace within their communities.
He described Eid as a time not only for celebration but also for reinforcing empathy, gratitude, and a shared commitment to societal well-being.
