Benue Massacre: Tinubu Orders Crackdown, Tasks Alia with Leading Peace Initiative
President Bola Tinubu has directed security chiefs to immediately enforce his earlier order for decisive action in Benue State, following a deadly attack in Yelwata that left at least 45 people dead.
The early Saturday morning assault, reportedly carried out by armed bandits, has triggered outrage and grief across the country.
Local accounts suggest the death toll could be significantly higher, with some residents estimating as many as 100 lives lost and numerous homes destroyed.
In a statement released by Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga on Sunday, Tinubu condemned the killings as “senseless,” “inhuman,” and “anti-progress.”
“The latest news of wanton killings in Benue State is very depressing,” the President said.
“Enough is enough. I have directed the security agencies to act decisively, arrest perpetrators on all sides, and ensure they face the full weight of the law.”
Tinubu emphasized the need for immediate security intervention, directing the intelligence services, police, and military to take control of the situation and prevent further escalation.
Beyond security measures, the President urged Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia to take the lead in initiating peace and reconciliation efforts between farmers, herders, and local communities.
“Governor Alia must now rise to the challenge of statesmanship by convening peace meetings and fostering dialogue among the warring groups,” Tinubu said.
“This bloodshed must stop, and peace can only come through honest engagement, justice, and mutual respect.”
Tinubu also warned political and community leaders in the state against making provocative statements capable of inflaming tensions and deepening divisions.
“Leaders must act responsibly. This is the time to heal wounds, not to open new ones through careless remarks.”
Saturday’s attack in Yelwata is one of the deadliest in recent times and underscores the urgency of comprehensive action to tackle insecurity and communal violence in Benue and other conflict-prone areas across the country.
