Benin Republic Coup Plotters Attempted to Shoot Down Nigerian Fighter Jet – Reports
Fresh details have emerged on Monday revealing that coup plotters in the Benin Republic attempted to shoot down a Nigerian Air Force (NAF) fighter jet that was deployed over Cotonou as part of Nigeria’s intervention to quell the attempted coup. The pilot, however, skillfully evaded the gunfire.
A video capturing the jet’s evasive maneuvers was shared on social media by security analyst Zagazola Makama. The footage highlighted the precision and professionalism of the NAF operation.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had authorized the deployment of the fighter jet, which also carried out aerial strikes targeting fleeing coup plotters. Reports indicated that as loyal forces battled to suppress the coup at the residence of President Patrice Talon and the presidential palace, the NAF jet intercepted coup plotters fleeing in armoured vehicles, neutralizing the threat and preventing their escape.
The air operation, conducted within 30 minutes, involved multiple coordinated strikes by Nigerian fighter jets operating inside Beninese airspace. Sources described the mission as “meticulously planned and executed,” with clear objectives to neutralize hostile elements, prevent regrouping, and restore stability in coordination with regional partners.
Authorities confirmed that the operation received approval from the Beninese government and was executed in strict compliance with international protocols, with no reports of collateral damage. Eyewitnesses in Cotonou reported hearing multiple explosions across strategic areas, underscoring the effectiveness of the intervention.
According to sources, the airstrikes successfully disabled the armoured vehicles and blocked key escape routes, resulting in the deaths of several coup plotters. The failed coup attempt was reportedly led by Lt. Pascal Tigri, who had briefly attempted to dissolve state institutions and seize military control of the Benin Republic.
The swift and coordinated action of both Nigerian and Beninese forces effectively restored order and reaffirmed regional commitment to democracy and stability in West Africa.
