According to the party, Soyinka’s intellectual brilliance, integrity and lifelong sacrifices have made him one of Africa’s most influential public figures, whose contributions extend far beyond literature to the defence of freedom, accountability and national development.

The party noted that Soyinka’s emergence in 1986 as the first African recipient of the Nobel Prize in Literature marked a defining moment for the continent, placing African literature and scholarship on the global stage.

The SDP also acknowledged its close relationship with the Nobel Laureate through its National Secretary, Dr. Olu Agunloye, whom it described as Soyinka’s protégé, saying the association continues to inspire the party’s commitment to democratic ideals.

As Soyinka marks his 92nd birthday, the SDP prayed for his continued good health and long life, expressing hope that Nigeria, Africa and the international community would keep benefiting from his wisdom, scholarship and steadfast advocacy for justice.
