Akwa Ibom Police Sanction Officers Over Viral Video, Reaffirm Professionalism

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has taken disciplinary action against three officers found guilty of professional misconduct, following a viral video that raised public concern.
In a press statement by the police Public Relations Office Dsp Timphon John the Command reaffirmed its commitment to discipline, accountability, and respect for citizens’ rights.
The affected officers—Insp. Festus James, Insp. Edet Edem, and Constable Akpan Lawrence—were subjected to an orderly room trial, where they were charged with Discreditable Conduct and Unlawful and Unnecessary Exercise of Authority.

Following the trial, the Adjudicating Officer ruled that the two Inspectors were demoted to the rank of Sergeant.

The Constable was given a major entry in his record and placed on one month of extra fatigue duty.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, upheld the ruling, forwarding it to AIG Zone 6, who also confirmed the disciplinary action.

Reiterating the Nigeria Police Force’s zero tolerance for misconduct, CP Azare assured the public that officers will be held accountable under the leadership of IGP Kayode Egbetokun, PhD, NPM.

The Command urged citizens to report any police misconduct through its official channels.
