Yar’Adua’s Legacy Rekindled with Tinubu’s Renaming of Petroleum Institute -Senator Yar’Adua

Senator Abdulaziz Musa Yar’Adua has described President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s decision to rename the Institute of Petroleum Studies, Kaduna, in honour of the late General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua as a powerful national affirmation of legacy, sacrifice, and democratic commitment.
The institution has been renamed the General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua University of Geological Sciences and Engineering Technology, a move the senator said goes beyond symbolism to cement the enduring place of the late military officer and statesman in Nigeria’s national memory.
According to him, the gesture reflects a rare continuity of national recognition for a figure whose life straddled both military service and democratic advocacy, and whose influence helped shape Nigeria’s political evolution.
He said General Yar’Adua stood out for his belief in a united Nigeria anchored on merit, discipline, and service, rather than ethnic or sectional advantage, adding that the renaming ensures those ideals remain visible to future generations of professionals trained in the institution.
“This is not just about renaming a school,” he said. “It is about preserving a philosophy of leadership rooted in sacrifice, vision, and nation-building.”
Senator Yar’Adua noted that the upgraded university now carries a heavier responsibility to produce graduates capable of driving innovation in the energy and geological sectors while embodying integrity and public service values associated with its namesake.
He expressed appreciation to President Tinubu and the Federal Government for what he called a “thoughtful and enduring honour,” adding that it would serve as a bridge between past democratic struggles and present national development efforts.
Speaking on behalf of the Yar’Adua family and constituents of Katsina Central, the senator said the recognition also serves as inspiration for younger Nigerians to embrace selfless leadership and national service.
He expressed optimism that the institution would emerge as a centre of excellence in science, engineering, and energy innovation, while keeping alive the democratic ideals for which General Shehu Yar’Adua is remembered.
The senator concluded by describing the renaming as a historic moment that reaffirms Nigeria’s capacity to honour those whose contributions continue to shape its national identity.
