HURIWA endorses Aisha Yesufu, Ikokwu for credible 2027 political leadership
The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has declared support for the political aspirations of prominent activist Aisha Yesufu, media professional Chiogo Constance Ikokwu, and other credible journalists and civic actors seeking elective offices in the 2027 general elections.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by its national Coordinator, Emmanuel Nnadozie Onwubiko, HURIWA indicated Nigeria has reached a defining moment in its democratic journey where competence, patriotism, integrity, courage, and a history of selfless public service should become the primary criteria for political leadership.
The civil rights advocacy group maintained that only credible Nigerians with demonstrable records of service and accountability should be entrusted with legislative and executive responsibilities.
According to HURIWA, Aisha Yesufu’s decision to move from civic advocacy into partisan politics represents a positive democratic development and reflects the growing need for activists and reform-minded citizens to participate directly in governance.
The group noted that for years, Yesufu has remained one of Nigeria’s most outspoken voices against injustice, corruption, abuse of power, and poor governance, arguing that citizens who have consistently defended democratic values deserve opportunities to contribute within government institutions.
HURIWA also commended Dr. Chiogo Constance Ikokwu over her decision to contest for the House of Representatives seat representing Idemili North and South Federal Constituency, describing her aspiration as part of a broader movement of professionals stepping forward to shape national development through public office.
The association praised Dr. Ikokwu’s contributions as a journalist and public affairs commentator, noting her roles in major media organisations including THISDAY Newspapers and ARISE News, where she consistently advocated for human rights, women and youth empowerment, national unity, and peace building.
HURIWA urged political parties to avoid recycling what it described as discredited political actors and instead create opportunities for credible citizens with intellectual capacity, integrity, and a strong understanding of governance and human rights.
The group stressed that Nigeria’s democracy would only record meaningful progress when principled professionals, reform advocates, and socially responsible citizens are encouraged and supported to contest and occupy elective offices.
HURIWA reaffirmed its solidarity with credible aspirants across the country and expressed confidence that Nigerians are increasingly prepared to support leadership driven by merit, accountability, and genuine public service rather than political propaganda.
