SDP Flags Security Breakdown, Urges Nigerians to Demand Leadership Shift in 2027

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has raised fresh concerns over Nigeria’s deteriorating security landscape, warning that the persistent wave of violence across the country signals a deeper national crisis marked by weak governance and declining regard for human life.
In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Araba Rufus Aiyenigba, the party said the scale and frequency of attacks since 2018 point to a troubling pattern of insecurity that has continued to spread across regions, leaving many communities vulnerable to banditry, kidnapping, and insurgency.
The SDP argued that the situation reflects a fundamental breakdown in leadership and coordination, insisting that the inability of successive administrations to implement coherent and sustained security strategies has worsened the crisis.
Directing criticism at the government of President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), the party said current efforts to tackle insecurity have fallen short, citing disjointed approaches and ineffective execution as key setbacks.
It also faulted earlier interventions, including negotiations and amnesty deals with armed groups, describing them as short-term measures that have failed to address the root causes of violence and, in some instances, emboldened criminal networks.
As part of its response, the SDP said it is advancing a comprehensive “national rescue agenda” focused on rebuilding the country’s security framework, enhancing accountability within institutions, and tackling underlying socio-economic drivers such as poverty, joblessness, and inequality.
The party drew attention to the stance of its presidential candidate, Adewole Adebayo, who has repeatedly advocated for a professional, intelligence-led approach to security management, free from political interference.
According to the SDP, Nigeria’s insecurity is closely tied to broader development challenges, including economic hardship and infrastructure deficits, which continue to fuel unrest and instability nationwide.
With the 2027 general elections approaching, the party called on Nigerians to seize what it described as a critical opportunity to demand competent leadership and a new direction for the country.
It maintained that a decisive shift away from “business-as-usual politics” is necessary to restore security, rebuild public trust, and place Nigeria on a path toward stability and sustainable development.
