Kogi State Governor, Ahmed Usman Ododo, has commended the Nigerian Army for sustaining Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage through the annual West African Social Activities (WASA) celebration, describing the event as a powerful symbol of unity and comradeship within the military.
The governor gave the commendation while delivering his speech as Special Guest of Honour at the 2025 WASA of the 12 Brigade, Nigerian Army, held on Sunday at Chari Maigumeri Barracks, Lokoja.
Governor Ododo praised officers and soldiers of the Nigerian Army for successfully blending diverse cultures, languages, and traditions in a peaceful atmosphere while remaining steadfast in their constitutional duty of defending Nigeria’s territorial integrity.
He described WASA as a historic cultural legacy dating back to the era of the West African Frontier Force, noting that the tradition was established to promote unity, relaxation, and strong bonds among troops and their families.
Represented by the State Security Adviser, Cmdr. Jerry Omodara, the governor stressed the importance of giving military personnel time to unwind and celebrate their achievements with loved ones.
“The WASA celebration provides the perfect avenue for troops to relax, share joy, and mark a befitting conclusion to the year’s activities,” he said.
Governor Ododo also applauded the leadership and personnel of the 12 Brigade for their sustained efforts in maintaining peace and security across Kogi State. He urged them to remain proactive, focused, and resilient in the face of security challenges, while charging them to redouble their efforts in 2026.
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting the military and other security agencies, emphasizing continued investment in their welfare and operational effectiveness.
“We recognize the daily sacrifices you make in protecting Kogi State and the nation from insecurity, banditry, and other threats,” he stated.
Earlier in his welcome address, Commander of the 12 Brigade, Brig.-Gen. Kasim Umar Sidi, praised officers and soldiers for their discipline, professionalism, and dedication throughout the year.
He described WASA as a unifying tradition that showcases Nigeria’s diversity while strengthening bonds among personnel, adding that the Brigade remains one family united by service.
Brig.-Gen. Sidi also expressed appreciation to Governor Ododo and the people of Kogi State for their continued support, describing them as “dear partners” of the Brigade.
He further lauded the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, for his purposeful leadership and unwavering commitment to troop welfare, training, and operational effectiveness, noting that his leadership has positively influenced morale and professionalism across the Nigerian Army.
