Social Media Activist Faces Court Over Alleged Defamation of Taraba Minister

By Ben Adaji, Jalingo

The Federal High Court in Jalingo has summoned social media activist Abdulmumuni Imam over allegations that he falsely accused the Minister of State for Regional Development, Barrister Uba Maigari, of diverting ₦16.5 billion meant for the reconstruction of the collapsed Namnai Bridge in Gassol Local Government Area of Taraba State.
Imam’s claims, posted on his verified Facebook page, have gone viral, drawing widespread attention and criticism. Legal counsel to Minister Maigari, Dr. Ibrahim Effiong Esq, told journalists that the allegations have gravely damaged the Minister’s reputation and misled the public.
“Social media is not a lawless space,” Effiong said. “Freedom of expression carries responsibility. Activism does not grant immunity from the law. False accusations can inflame public opinion and cause real harm. Mr. Imam must now defend his claims in court.”
According to Effiong, the Minister has never diverted public funds and is seeking the court’s intervention to clarify the facts. “This is not about money or compensation,” Effiong stressed. “It is about ensuring that the record is set straight and that individuals are held accountable for the content they post online.”
Effiong also addressed Imam’s recent claims on social media that security operatives were after him, clarifying that the court—not any security agency—issued the summons.
“The law applies equally to everyone,” Effiong said. “If Mr. Imam can prove the Minister is in the wrong, the law will take its course. If not, he must face the consequences of spreading falsehoods and attempting to manipulate public perception.”
This case highlights the growing concern over irresponsible use of social media in Nigeria, where viral posts can damage reputations, incite public unrest, and complicate governance. Legal experts say the Imam case may serve as a benchmark for holding online activists accountable for unverified or defamatory claims.
