ADC to Tinubu: Nigerians Still in the Dark – Where’s the 24-Hour Power You Promised?

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has taken a bold swipe at President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, calling out his administration over what it describes as a glaring failure to deliver on electricity promises made during the 2023 campaign.
In a sharply worded statement released Sunday, the party’s Interim National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, said Nigerians are still living in darkness while power bills skyrocket and the national grid continues to collapse.
“Mr. President, you said—and we quote—‘If I don’t give you electricity, don’t vote for me.’ Well, Nigerians are keeping the receipt,” the statement read.
According to the ADC, tariffs have jumped by 240% since Tinubu took office in May 2023, yet more than 90 million Nigerians remain without electricity access. In cities, households under the Band A to E classification reportedly struggle with as little as 4 to 6 hours of power daily, while in rural areas, many families are completely off the grid.
“Millions are still charging their phones at kiosks and burning through their savings on generator fuel. This isn’t just disappointing—it’s dangerous,” Abdullahi said, adding that the national grid has collapsed 12 times in just two years.
The party accused the federal government of treating the power crisis with “crippling complacency,” saying there has been no significant reform, no recovery plan, and no serious attempt to explain the persistent failures.
What stings more, the ADC claims, is the contrast between Tinubu’s confident campaign messaging and the stark reality Nigerians are facing. “He told us to hold him accountable. We are doing just that,” Abdullahi declared.
As frustration mounts among citizens facing rising energy costs and dwindling supply, the ADC warns that 2027 may be the reckoning year for broken promises.
“The President said we shouldn’t re-elect him if he doesn’t fix the power problem. It seems Nigerians are ready to take him at his word,” the statement concluded.
So far, no official response has been issued from the Presidency.
