Tinubu Opens 2025 Public Accounts Conference, Reaffirms Commitment to Fiscal Transparency
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to transparency and accountability in public finance, pledging that funds saved from the removal of fuel subsidy will be redirected to critical infrastructure, social safety nets, and key economic reforms.
Speaking through the Minister of State for Finance, Dr. Doris Uzoka-Anite, at the official opening of the 2025 National Conference on Public Accounts and Fiscal Governance in Abuja, the President said the government is determined to build a new culture of fiscal discipline and responsible governance.
The theme of the conference, “Fiscal Governance in Nigeria: Charting a New Course for Transparency and Sustainable Development”, sets the tone for what the President described as a renewed focus on ensuring every kobo of public funds is accounted for and put to good use.
“Fiscal governance is the lifeblood of national development. Without accountability, transparency, and sound management of public resources, no nation can prosper—regardless of its natural wealth,” Tinubu said.
The President highlighted ongoing reforms in public finance management, including the deployment of digital tools such as the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS), the Government Integrated Financial Management Information System (GIFMIS), and the Open Treasury Portal. These systems, he said, have enhanced transparency by making public funds traceable and ensuring civil servants are accountable.
The conference, which brings together stakeholders from the National Assembly, government agencies, civil society, and the private sector, aims to promote fiscal transparency, accountability, and sustainable development. Discussions are expected to generate practical recommendations to strengthen the role of Public Accounts Committees and improve the oversight of public expenditure.
By convening the conference, the Tinubu administration is signaling its readiness to deepen fiscal reforms and encourage broad stakeholder participation in governance.
Director of Information and Public Relations at the Ministry of Finance, Mohammed Manga, described the event as a milestone in the country’s pursuit of open and responsible governance.
The outcomes of the conference are expected to support Nigeria’s efforts to achieve long-term national development goals through prudent, transparent, and accountable fiscal policies.
