The Nigerian Army School of Islamic Affairs (NASIA) has honoured renowned Islamic scholar and university professor, Prof. Sani Umar Riyar Lemo, for his outstanding contributions to Islamic education and his consistent advocacy against extremism.
The award was presented in Lagos by the Commandant of NASIA, Brigadier General A.Y. Emekomo, who praised the scholar’s dedication to spreading balanced and peaceful interpretations of Islam.
“Prof. Riyar Lemo has devoted his life to teaching authentic Islamic knowledge that guides people away from extremist ideologies,” said Brig. Gen. Emekomo.
“His voice has remained consistent in reforming minds through balanced Islamic education both in Nigeria and beyond.”
He recalled their long-standing relationship, dating back to their university days and a shared journey to Saudi Arabia.
“That’s why it’s important for me to personally honour him,” the commander added.
Describing him as courageous, humble, and widely respected, the NASIA commander commended the professor’s commitment to enlightening society through lectures, writings, and mentorship, earning him admiration at home and abroad.
In his response, Prof. Riyar Lemo expressed gratitude to the institution and its leadership for the recognition.
He reiterated that Islam stands for peace, unity, and compassion.
“Islam means peace. A true Muslim is peaceful, gentle, and patient,” he said. “Yes, there are bad eggs in every society—including in religious communities—but that doesn’t define the entire faith or its followers.”
The event highlighted NASIA’s continued efforts in promoting moderate Islamic teachings and recognizing individuals who contribute to national unity and peaceful coexistence.
