ActionAid Calls for Independent Investigation into Sexual Harassment Allegations in NASS

ActionAid Nigeria has demanded a thorough and transparent investigation into recent sexual harassment allegations within the National Assembly, warning that failure to act could perpetuate abuse of power and impunity.

The organization, known for its advocacy on gender justice, condemned the allegations and stressed the importance of a credible inquiry that upholds human dignity and accountability.

Speaking in Abuja, ActionAid Nigeria’s Country Director, Andrew Mamedu, urged the Code of Conduct Bureau, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), and the National Assembly’s Ethics Committee to lead an impartial probe that meets international human rights standards. He emphasized that any confirmed wrongdoing must be met with accountability, while politically motivated claims must also be exposed.

“The National Assembly must enforce a zero-tolerance policy against harassment and abuse of power, particularly against women in leadership,” Mamedu stated. He called for stronger institutional safeguards, including anonymous reporting channels, independent investigative mechanisms, and protections for whistleblowers.

ActionAid cautioned that ignoring these allegations could erode public trust, discourage women from participating in politics, and damage the credibility of Nigeria’s democracy. The organization urged swift action to uphold justice and restore confidence in governance.
